Topic:

Anaerobic digestion is the process by which microorganisms break down complex organic matter in an environment devoid of oxygen. This process produces carbon dioxide and methane contaminated with hydrogen sulfide. Anaerobic digestion has been used to treat municipal waste since the late 1800s however, focus recently has been on treating other sources of organic waste and capturing the methane for use in combined heat and power or injection into the grid. The presentation will focus on the presenters research into the complex microbiocidal communities in a two stage food waste digester and factors that impact the health of the communities. The presentation will then give a brief overview of an industrial application of a single stage digester treating dairy manure to produce renewable natural gas and the processing steps that are required to clean, separate, and compress the natural gas into pipeline quality for injection into the grid.
