Webinar Description:
Sewage sludge has become a sink of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) due to the ineffectiveness of biological treatment process for PFAS removal. To combat PFAS pollution, we tested the feasibility of applying stabilization approach in sewage sludge and biosolids. The results indicated that adding a sorbent such as RemBind® or granular activated carbon (GAC) to sludge showed a remarkable stabilization performance in terms of the reduction of leachable PFAS. Our data also showed that applying stabilization approach to the treated sludge, biosolids, can significantly lower the bioavailability of PFAS to plants after biosolids land application, reducing the potential health risks posed by PFAS.
Biography:
Dr. Weilan Zhang, a registered Professional Engineer, is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Sustainable Engineering at University at Albany. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Prior to joining SUNY Albany as a Postdoctoral Associate in 2018, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Zhang's research work centers on contaminants of emerging concern, such as engineered nanomaterials and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
