Radon as an Environmental Tracer for Geological Studies”  by Carlos Bielicki, Durridge Company, Inc.

at Century House, Latham

in the evening: 5pm Social Hour, 6pm Dinner, 7pm Program

Radon is a radioactive gas released in rocks and soil from the normal decay of the elements uranium, thorium, and radium. As radon gas is released, it moves into the air and into groundwater and surface water. While most people associate radon with its harmful effects on human health, what is less known is radon’s excellent properties as an environmental tracer for geological studies. For years geologists have used radon as a tracer for groundwater/surface water interactions. Additionally, environmental engineers use radon as a tracer for vapor intrusion studies and for locating and monitoring the remediation of NAPL (non-aqueous phase liquid) contamination. The US EPA has in fact published studies and reports on these uses.

This presentation will describe how radon is used as a tracer in these various applications and review actual examples from published studies and reports.
